Hyperpigmentation or Pigmentation occurs when the body generates too much melanin that causes discolouration in some parts of the skin. This can happen either in diffused form or localized manner. There are different causes for this such as UVA damage from the sun, hormonal changes or other types of skin conditions like rosacea or acne.
Some of the examples of hyperpigmentation include sun spots, age spots and freckles.
The most affected people are those living in the hotter climates or with darker skin.
There are different methods available to help in lessening pigmentation. These include micro-needling, skin peels, laser treatment and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. The chemical peel involves the removal of the skin’s outer layer. This can stimulate new cell and collagen growth in a more systematic manner.
At Josan Holistic Hospital we use laser treatment that uses heat to encourage collagen production. The concentrated short pulses of light can shatter the melanin in the dark patches, thus making them less obvious.
