Acne
Acne is a skin problem that happens when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells or sebum. The main affected area is the face, upper part of the chest and back. It happens mainly due to excess production of oil or sebum due to hormonal fluctuations. It can be in the form of whiteheads, blackheads or comedones.
Types of acne
● Non-Inflammatory Acne: This includes whiteheads and blackheads. These generally respond to over the counter topical applications which exfoliate the dead layer naturally. Preparations mainly include salicylic acid that helps to exfoliate the dead layer.
● Inflammatory Acne: These are red and little swollen pimples and occur due to excessive bacteria growth on the skin. There are many treatment options available which include medications, lifestyle changes and laser procedures. Simple carbohydrates such as sugar may also help. The most commonly used are benzoyl peroxide and other retinoids. In women, several types of birth control pills act against acne.
Acne Scars
This is caused when inflammation exists for a longer period of time and is not treated on time. This type of burning affects the dermal layer of skin and leaves the skin surface rough, uneven and sometimes dark spots. This leads to scarring and later on excess collagen deposition or loss at the site of the lesion.
- Icepick Scars: Narrow or deep, extends into the dermis.
- Boxcar Scars: Round or indented with sharp borders.
- Rolling Scars: Wide and wave-like pattern on the surface.
Hypertrophic Scars:
These are distinguished by increased collagen production after the abnormal healing response. Raised from the skin and are also known as keloid scars.
Pigmentation:
These are the result of nodular or cystic acne. In this acne, an inflammation deep under the skin encourages the pigment-producing cells to generate more melanin, giving the spot a darker appearance. Daily use of SPF 30 or higher can reduce such risks.
